Wanderer’s Tarot by Casey Zabala

This is a look-through of Casey Zabala’s Wanderer’s Tarot. It’s a black and white tarot deck published in 2021 by Weiser Books billed as a feminist tarot deck for modern witches.

In terms of production, it comes in a fold-out matte finish box while the cards have a semi-gloss finish with metallic silver edging. The size is more oracle than your typical tarot standard, which elevates the presentation aesthetics when you use these cards on clients for professional readings.

Major Arcana

I love that Zabala equates Key 6: The Lovers card with prana, and Strength with mind over matter, or noting how when the Wheel of Fortune card shows up, it’s saying that fate has the reins. Justice is the moral compass. Death foretells the ending of a cycle. Judgment is awakening to a new reality. The World affirms that you’ve been feeling in the divine flow.

Suit of Feathers (Wands/Fire)

The suits have been renamed to Moons (for Cups), Stones (for Pentacles), Feathers (for Wands…I admit this confused me at first), and Knives (for Swords). Moons signify psychic channels and healing, the creative element. Stones are what were sown and what is harvested. Feathers is spirit flight. And Knives is the force of discernment, logic, reasoning, and intellect. It is associated with learning.

The court cards Page, Queen, King, and Knight are re-titled to Philosopher (the eternal student who is also now a teacher), Goddess (strong, nurturing figure), Prophet (seeker and seer, the one with the knowledge), and Wanderer (the buoyant and excited traveler) respectively. My guess is that the Wanderer is the Knight equivalent, or at least that’s how I’ve been reading with the deck.

Suit of Knives (Swords/Air) and Moons (Cups/Water)

The pip cards are reminiscent of the BOTA Tarot and some of the earlier 70s and 80s decks, where it’s something between the ornamental pips you’d find in a Marseilles and the narrative illustrated pips of the Rider-Waite-Smith. The art is also more abstract.

Suit of Knives (Swords/Air)

So for instance, the human-like figures depicted in the Knives court are actually rendered out of line drawings of knives. The courts in the Moons suit feature moons as heads.

Suit of Moons (Cups/Water)

That Ace of Moons, by the way… And the way the numbered pips are designated is a creative touch. They’re also abstract enough that you don’t have to read with RWS meanings. These cards open themselves up to a wider range of interpretation and provide a more open canvas for your intuition.

Suit of Stones (Pentacles/Earth)

If you like minimalism and line art with the quality of engravings, you’ll really appreciate the Wanderer’s Tarot. I also think there’s something to the deeply symbolic quality of the art that lends itself well in psychic tarot readings.

The renaming and also shift in perspective when it comes to the courts– now the Philosopher, the Goddess, the Prophet, and the Wanderer– reads better for the modern-day audience than the more traditional Page, Knight, Queen, and King court.

The Wanderer’s Tarot is a beautiful deck for the modern-day spiritualist, with symbolism rooted primarily in the archetypes of nature and the cosmos. When you pare back illustration to just an artist’s line art, you’ll see that artist’s soul and their philosophy of life. Zabala’s line art reveals a mystic, one who is free-spirited and instinctual. Something about her style reminds me of Henri Matisse’s expressionistic sketches.

I bought this deck really looking forward to it, it’s so beautiful. But I only got 65/78 cards somehow and I’m so saddened it’s not complete.
