I shared a line drawing on Instagram of a fan art sketch exercise I did. I’ve been doing daily sketch exercises to hone my techniques. This one happened to be a grid thing. Anyway, I chose to do baby Yoda, and then modified the original reference by having him read tarot cards.

I thought it would be fun to see a side by side comparison of traditional media for illustration, i.e., colored pencils, vs. digital media. That’s why I did both. The center one above was done with colored pencil and the last one is digital painting in Corel Paintshop Pro.

Comparing the colored pencil one done by hand to the digital art one I did on my computer in Paintshop, I mean, there’s no arguing that the digital art one is cleaner. If you do download the image files, you can zoom way in and see that with the digital one, I played around with textures. And yet there’s that multi-colored blending thing I did with the colored pencils that was super easy by hand, but would have been a challenge to replicate digitally (so I didn’t).

Traditional and digital are just two very different art mediums. The colored pencil one took a lot less time than the digital art one. The digital art one took twice as long to complete because I was playing around with different textures, rather than straight coloring-in.

You can also see that in the hand-drawn original, my proportion was a little bit off (despite using the grid system) and I made Grogu a teensy bit chubbier than he’s actually portrayed. Digitally, I tweaked the line drawing, so you can see how he lost almost five pounds between the two images.
