Cat Aura Tarot by Malumir R. Logan and E. C. Mazur

Prismatic edging on the deck.

The Cat Aura Tarot tunes in to the magical perspective of cats, and like the intellect of cats, this deck is so much more, as you’ll soon see. “These curious, courageous, and happy felines have so many stories to share with you,” writes Malumir R. Logan, the deck creatrix, author, and cat mom who is the proprietor of Acorn and Burdock.

She teams up with illustrator E. C. Mazur, whose highly detailed nature and animal art is absolutely mesmerizing. Be sure to check out her online art portfolio.

This deck is calibrated to work with the chakra system and with our auras. Per the guidebook, chakras are energy centers in our bodies, whereas auras are the electromagnetic field surrounding our body in a way that reflects the health of our chakras.

The colors of our auras reflect the color spectrum of chakras. So, for instance, a yellow-gold aura is telling us something about the dominance of the solar plexus chakra in that person; a green aura communicates something about the heart chakra, and a violet aura communicates something about the crown chakra, etc.

Pages in the Cat Aura Tarot

I also love how the creators have connected the chakra system and the tarot architecture to the Tree of Life. The Pages in this deck correspond with with Malkuth on the Tree, and also the crown chakra, on the rationale that the Tree of Life repeats itself once the top (Kether) or bottom (Malkuth) is reached, and the Crown correspondence allows the Pages to reflect the innocence, possibility, and learning opportunity of the top of the Tree.

Compare the 2s, 3s, Queens, and Kings of the Wands and Chalices.

The Twos correspond with the third eye chakra and Chokhmah; the Threes to the throat chakra and Binah, but then the Queens, instead of being grouped with the Threes for Binah and the throat chakra, the Queens in this deck correspond to the third eye chakra.

Compare the 2s, 3s. Queens, and Kings of the Swords and Pentacles.

And likewise, the Kings are switched, where instead of the third eye chakra with the Twos, Kings in this deck correspond with the throat chakra. You can read more about this deck’s intricate and original system of Kabbalistic, chakra, and tarot correspondences here.

The structure of the Cat Aura Tarot is fairly traditional and follows the RWS, with minor changes to the key titles, such as Wheel instead of the Wheel of Fortune, and Hanged One instead of the Hanged man. The matte finish really enhances the color saturation, giving the cards a rich, luxuriant feel.

Just look at the coloring! You can click on the photos for a zoomed in close-up view. The colors are so vibrant that you almost get the impression that they’re animated — in movement.

You get two versions of Key 0: The Fool – an alternate version includes a small canine companion. I do like the version with the dog a bit better, so I’m glad that the alternate option is given.

Suit of Wands. Click image for close-up view of the cards.

In the suit of Wands, the kitties explore ancient grottoes lit by streams of sunlight. This might be my favorite suit in the Cat Aura deck because of the entrance to the grottoes framing the skies. The rich colors, the depictions of reiki or qi life force emanating from and wafting around the cats, it all comes together so exquisitely.

Kitties exploring ancient grottoes.

The Wands represent spiritual and aspirational energy, depicted by the cave entrances and beams of light. I also love how much personality the cat illustrations have, really empowering these scenes to come to life.

Kitties frolicking by bodies of water in the Chalices.

The Chalices find our felines frolicking near pools of water, flowing creeks, waterfalls, and taking respite by the lake. To highlight the deck’s features, note the golden sparkles around the Knight of Chalices – it signifies the qi or life force of the solar plexus chakra. The blue sparkles around the King of Chalices indicates the throat chakra.

This is the suit of emotional energy. The backdrops for these illustrations are stunning. In the 2 of Chalices, a bonded pair of cats snuggle on an old palace railing. The curious cat in the Ace of Chalices has a paw raised toward the swimming fish in the freshwater spring. The companion guidebook provides the perfect little description of each work of art, something I very much appreciate about companion guidebooks.

Suit of Swords. Click image for close-up view of the cards.

In the suit of Swords, kitties are basking under open sky, under varying weather conditions. Some of these illustrations are so emotionally compelling, like the 3 of Swords, featuring a battered and wounded cat, but one who is brave, defiant against all odds and determined to weather the storm. And some of the illustrations are all the more appreciated when you have lived with cats. Like the 8 of Swords showing a cat terrified of a cucumber.

Kitties frolicking outdoors, beneath an open sky.

The Swords represent our mental energy and how we think. So you’ll see the cunning, the ingenuity, the pensiveness, the curiosity, and all the temperaments of cats here in the suit of Swords, showing the ways they think strategically, critically, and creatively.

Pentacles feature cats in lush and verdant landscapes. By the way, every time I get a cat deck, I look through it for ginger and white kitties, because my late Prince Marshall Rimbaud the Great was a ginger and white kitty, much like the one you see in the 2 of Pentacles.

The Pentacles suit represents tangible energy and physical things, like money, belongings, and the body. Here, the scenes in the Pentacles show the cats in active physical motion, or enjoying the pleasures of worldly life, as you see in the 3 of Pentacles.

“Amidst the temple’s ruin, the Magician sits tall under a sacred alcove arch woven with white roses, channeling their magic into a glowing orb.” Chakras: Third Eye; Crown

Another unique selling point about this deck is its function as a tool for reiki practitioners. This deck is intended to help reiki professionals identify the chakras that their clients most need assistance with.

“On a roof, three aggressive cats are distracted by glowing sparks in the shape of a bird. Meanwhile, a tiny kitten sneaks along a ledge beneath them, using the sparks as a decoy to escape the others.”

Pulling a card from this deck can guide the reiki practitioner to pinpoint the relationships between chakra issues and the client’s or querent’s path to well-being.

The illustrations in this deck are so provocative, like the 7 of Swords above, where the kitten is projecting that image of the bird, showing the kitten’s mental prowess.

As a tool for mystics, the guidebook includes a “Vibrant” section for each card, which indicates how the card can be used for healing and in various metaphysical practices. The guidebook also offers rich, inspirational content that a life coach can integrate into their client work.

By the way, this little white booklet (the guidebook) that comes in the keepsake box along with your deck, is fantastic. I love how much detail it includes. It’s written for beginner’s, but also provides practical tips for the advanced reader who wants to integrate tarot with other metaphysical systems.

Each card entry has the chakra correspondence, astrological energies, the key Message, the Vibrant notes for healing, Suppressed to indicate what needs to be worked on, and the Traditional key phrases for each card.

The bonus card Hope and two versions of Key 0: The Fool.

The bonus card Hope shows a courageous cat emerging from the depths into a glorious welcoming open space, propelled by swirls of sparkling and loving energy.

Back in the day at fundraising events hosted by local animal shelters, I’d volunteer to do tarot readings for the public, and all proceeds would go to the shelter. Reading with a deck like the Cat Aura Tarot would be perfect at such events.

Likewise, for those who are animal communicators and do readings to either look into the mind of a kitty or to connect to the spirit of a kitty who has passed on, you’ll love working with the Cat Aura Tarot.

There’s definitely a special place in my heart now for Logan and Mazur’s Cat Aura Tarot. I love the attention to detail in the art and also in the production, how much content you get in the little white book that comes with the deck, especially for anyone who wants to work with the deck in life coaching settings, or for reiki and aura readings.

Whether you are new to the tarot and a cat lover or a professional reader who might want to pick up a deck specializing in animal communications and mediumship, whether you are an energy healer or just someone who collects all things kitty, you’re going to find the Cat Aura Tarot infinitely delightful.

Beautiful and intriguing but the price is $87 ( and I guess shipping is additional). I’ve stopped buying costly indie decks like this. Way too many great decks out there at much more affordable prices.

This deck is very very special to me. Of all the decks I own, holding this one in my hands feels most powerful. I can’t explain it. A lot of heart and soul went into creating this deck. I’m glad to read such a positive review and the blog author’s own thoughts on the deck. Independent decks are more costly for obvious reasons.

I totally identify with this. Malumir’s Chakra Healing Tarot deck has done exactly that to me amongst too many decks to count. It has a very notable energy that makes me want to keep it in my hands and it has from the beginning. I have not got this one yet but I’m definitely going to, it is stunning.
